The Skincare Tag | The Ramble

Describe your skincare routine in 5 words SLS-free, simple, gentle, thorough, hydrating

  What's your skin type?
Oily/Combination that needs hydration

  What's your favourite skincare product?
I am tempted to say my new Clarisonic because as long as it isn't overuse it gives amazing results.... however I've only had it a short while. So a more long standing favourite product would be the Amie Cooling Clay Mask (found in Boots - review post here) as I truly love to use it and it's great for oily, blemish-prone skin.
Top blemish zapper I swear by Origins Super Spot Remover Gel (review post here). It is a little pricey for such a small product but then you need so little of it. The gel really does reduce spots over night and will actually remove them within 2-3 days.
Face wipes yay or nay?
I did use to be particle to a face wipe or two when feeling lazy but now I know they do more harm than good to the skin. So on lazy nights when makeup removal seems like too much of a chore I opt for the L'Oreal Micellar Solution (review post here) on a cotton pad, then I just make sure I do a thorough double cleanse in the morning. Though this doesn't happen often though as I like to remove makeup way before getting in to bed when I have the energy to do it!
  Toner yay or nay?
The new type of toner 'the exfoliating toner' is all the rage at the moment and even though I have yet to hop on the bandwagon I can see the benefits and appeal of a non-manual exfoliate. However with my Clarisonic (which I won't be casting aside any time soon) and Ginvera Marvel Gel (review post here)... that is pretty much a non-manual exfoliate I feel my skin doesn't need anymore exfoliating.  But yay or nay for the more standard toner I would be inclined to say nay. I think a lot of high street toners can either be too stripping (when targeted at blemish prone skin/blackheads) or not actually do much at all.
High end skincare or high end make up?
I truly believe that with good quality skincare that is right for your skin you can make low cost/high street makeup look flawless. So I would always go for high end skincare over high end makeup. However just because someone spends a lot on high end skincare doesn't mean they will have good skin.... a lot of the high end skincare brands still include ingredients you should be avoiding so I think you need a good amount of knowledge about your own skin type and skincare ingredients in general to get the most out of high end skincare.

What's the most unusual skincare product you've tried?
That would have to be Snail Cream?! Yes, I have actually applied snail slime to my face! Earlier this year Rachel from Blush and Brunch sent me a very lovely and generous package containing a range of Korean beauty products (you can see what she sent me here) which also included a sachet of Tony Moly Intense Care Snail Cream that was actually 70% snail slime! Snail creams are pretty much old hat in Korean... they really are everywhere, however it was very odd knowing I was applying the slime of a disgusting creature to my face!

You're in a French pharmacy and can only pick one item - what is it?  With the Escentual website stocking so many french skincare brands I really wouldn't be sure what to pick up in a French Pharmacy. So I will have to be boring and say I'd probably end up picking something that seemed like a totally different product to try out, maybe some kind of under eye mask or aerosol face mask.

Tell us your top skincare tip  It would be to never underestimate the power of cleansing thoroughly if you have blemish prone skin. Using the right cleansers (always SLS-free when going for a facial wash and a cream cleanser in the evening) and double cleansing at night (with a flannel to gently exfoliate), you really can improve your skin.

Describe your skincare routine in five words...

Simple // Thorough // Moisturising // Unchanging // Affordable

What's your skin type?

I have normal/combo skin - it is dry over my cheeks, arounf my eyes and along my jawline but I sometimes get a little greasy around my T-zone. I have large pores and some blemishes but not full-on cystic acne!

What's your favourite skincare product?

Peaches and Clean by Soap and Glory - my Holy Grail, it always clears up my skin and smells so darn good x

Top Blemish Zapper?

I love the clean and clear dual action moisturiser - a blob of that on a blemish and it's settled down in the morning.

Face Wipes yay or nay?

I like face wipes to remove my face makeup but never as a cleanser on their own!

Toner yay or nay?

Exfoliating toners are fab and I don't feel as though my skin is clean unless I use some kind of water on a cotton pad over my skin.

High end skincare or high end makeup?

I don't splurge on makeup or skincare very often but I think I'd be more inclined to buy more expensive skincare for the good ingredients - if you have good skincare you don't need a lot of makeup!

What's the most unusual skincare product you've tried?

Clean and Clear's Blackhead clearing lotion - it stings and doesn't help at all; good skin isn't meant to be painful, right?

You're in a French pharmacy and can only pick one item - what is it?

Bioderma, for sure - it's so much cheaper abroad!

Tell us your top skincare tip?

Keep to a good skincare routine from a young age and stick to it - don't chop and change products regularly otherwise your skin will be confuzzled (confused + puzzled)! Also, don't be afraid of products that say 'anti-aging' - you won't end up looking like a 4 year old if you use them!

I hope you liked this post wrapping up 'Skincare Week'! Make sure you do this tag and say I tagged you! Leave me links to your posts below x

Evening Skincare Routine Autumn 2013 | dealing with dry skin, dullness and acne

After Tuesday's post on my morning skincare, we're onto evening skincare. I use a few different products in the evening and know everything works really well for me.

On days when I wear eye makeup and waterproof mascara, I like to use this Garnier 2-in-1 makeup remover. It works really well at removing Telescopic mascara. I do have to hold it on my eyes for a few seconds and rub a little but for £2 it does its job amazingly.

I love removing my face makeup and daily grime with a cleansing balm; this one from Boots Botanics is fabulous and super affordable. It smells divine and is lovely for facial massage.

Pixi Glow Tonic is always out of stock and Clarins' Exfoliating Toner is a little pricey so this Cleasing Toner, also from Botanics, does a great job but does contain alcohol. However, it doesn't irritate my skin :)

The Hylauronic Youth Serum from Balance is a new addition to my routine but contains Hylasome® EG10 which is similar to Hylauronic Acid - basically it's my alternative to Hydraluron. I've noticed a difference in levels of hydration in my skin and it feels a lot smoother - worth a try!

I've been using this night cream for a while now and it works really well but isn't anything special. Cheap and cheerful!

I use the same eye cream morning and night - this Vitamin E one is nice and has a good thick consistency.

I hope these skincare posts have helped you develop your skincare routine. Obviously, I'm no expert at all but I've learnt a lot about skincare and will try and answer any Qs you may have in the comments!

Morning Skincare Routine Autumn 2013 | dealing with dry skin, dullness and acne

I haven't updated y'all on my skincare routines since June and a lot has changed! I'm now worshipping Caroline Hirons and trying to make my routines a lot better! I've seen amazing changes in my skin and it now looks a lot healthier - I still get the occasional breakout from hormones etc. but nothing skincare related which is awesome!

I wake up at 6.30 and after washing my hands to remove any germs I move onto cleansing my face. I've been using the Superfacialist Creamy Cleanser which I didn't like at first but now I love - see my full thoughts in my review. I am switching this up every other month with Soap and Glory's Peaches and Clean cleanser which I loooove but don't want my skin to become 'immune' to.

To tone in the mornings I like to keep it simple and just use a micellar solution - this one from B.Pure is my favourite and it leaves my skin refreshed and ready for moisturiser.

For winter I love this Soap and Glory For Daily Youth moisturiser as it leaves my skin really hydrated and glowing!

I've been on a quest to find a good eye cream and this Boots Vitamin E one is one of those! It's quite thick and leaves my eyes moisturised.

Come back on Thursday to see my Night Time Routine x

Quick & Easy 5 Product Face

My face doesn't feature on here often but I had to share my go-to makeup look from the last few weeks - a 5 product face.

My base is the Revlon BB Cream - I love the finish of it but it doesn't last on my dry skin for very long so I only wear it for shorter trips out. To cover my dark circles and highlight my face I used the L'Oreal Lumi Magique Concealer - it gives a really glowy finish and makes my skin look fab (even if I do say so myself!). For my brows I used the Maybelline Brow Mascara that sculpts and holds them in place. I can't go without my mascara and I use the L'Oreal Telescopic Waterproof *discontinued, sob*. Last, for my cheeks and lips I used the Max Factor Cream Blush in Soft Pink.

Hope you like this really natural look - 100% high street makeup that is all amazing!

What are your favourite no-makeup makeup products?

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Charm | Review and Swatches + UK Seller!

I've loved my other Revlon Balm Stain in Cherish for a while and wore it on almost every girls' night out with my friends *ie nandos and a movie being home by 7.30*  but I wanted a slightly more wearable shade - honey looked pretty but swatched it just didn't look like my kind of shade (though it'll probably be in my collection by december x). The only colour I'd seen that I liked was Charm - a gorgey peachy shade - but there was one problem; it was America-exclusive. However, after a night of filling up my virtual basket on amazon I stumbled across this - and it was way cheaper than the uk rrp price. I snatched it up and have been wearing it for the past month non-stop!

The swatch does not do it justice - the colour is super glowing and pulls a face together. I love how long-lasting the formula is and how easy these are to apply. I'd definitely recommend these!

Midweek At Home Manicure | Notes on Nail Rehab

After reading Anna's post on Nail Rehab, I realised that my nails hardly ever have nail polish on them. This isn't my choice - if you haven't noticed from the Super Strict School Makeup post, I go to a school where your face (and nails) must always be bare - I've even had my toes checked! One good thing that comes out of having clean nails is that they are super strong and grow really quickly, which is good for me but not so great for my netball team mates *ouch!*. However, once in a while, I like to gove myself a manicure treat and these are the products I use!

1 - Primark Nail File + Buffer
I do have one terribly ridged nail from a door/finger collision so I do buff my nails with this file that costs about £1. Then I file the edges so they're smooth.

2 - Nail Polish Remover
To ensure my nails are clean I take 1 cotton pad and soak it in nail polish remover - my fave is this one with a pump from LIDL! Then I swipe the pad over my nails until they are squeaky clean!

3 - essie feed me
This hydrating base coat keeps my nails strong whilst adding a little shine so they look healthy - it can be found from boots for £8.99.

4 - hand cream
I have extra dry hands and I need hand cream 24/7 - this soap and glory one smells amazing and keeps them moisturised!

How do you manicure your hands?

Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara in Dark Blond Review | The New Thing

I was so excited to try this as soon as I heard of its release. I was intrigued when the Pixiwoo sisters used the product similar fron diegodalllapalma and wanted to give a more natural but still defined brow look a go for back to school.

The wand is a little weird - it's normal til bam! A giant bristly ball on the end! I was scared at first but it is really easy and not clumpy at all on application. The colour is perfect and it leaves me with subtly defined eyebrows. This product is perfect i you have okay looking eyebrows but want a little more grooming that clear mascara - a winner for me!

£4.99 from Boots and Superdrug

What brow products do you use?

Back To School | School Bag Essentials

Second instalment of this week's post theme - Back To School! These are things I could not live without having in my school bag all the time!

1.) My pencil case
I am incredibly fussy when it comes to stationery and hate borrowing things off other people - I like my pens, pencils and colours! Without this I also wouldn't be a responisble pupil for my teachers *geek*.

2.) An umbrella
I live in the UK and we're famous for our rainy days - they're spontaneous and so an umbrella is always needed daily for a light shower or thunderstorm.

3.) A book
When teachers are  late for lessons or I have a bit of free time I like to grab a book - I'm loving Ken Follett at the moment - if you're not a reader the TV series(es) are great too!

4.) Water
Whether it's hot or freezing, keeping hydrated is essential for good skin and a healthy lifestyle - we should aim to drink a couple of litres a day!

5.) Beauty Kit
My beauty kit contains lip balm, wipes, paracetamol, hand cream and sanitiser, feminine products, a mini first aid kit and a concealer stick for touch ups. Having a little bag comes in handy - not just for you but for your mates as well!

I hope this helped you whether it's for your handbag or schoolbag!

What am I missing in my beauty bag? What do you carry?

Back To School | Strict School-Appropriate Makeup Products for No-Makeup Makeup

My school is very clear on rules when it comes to makeup - there is to be none of it! However, how do they know it's there when the makeup is undetectable - secret makeup!

Before I begin with my makeup, whether it be a weekday or weekend, I prep with an SPF as it protects against sun damage - one that doesn't break me out is the Avon SPF 50. On a good skin day I'll just use concealer under my eyes and on blemishes but on a day where my skin is acting up I use a bb cream (not pictured) - my favourite is the Witch BB Cream as it helps to heal acne with witch hazel and looks really natural. A good concealer to follow up with that works well under the eyes and on blemishes is the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer; it comes in a good shade range too! Setting with a powder is important if you want you makeup to last - make sure you touch up throughout the day if you have oily skin. I don't feel like my face is complete without bronzer so I add a very small amount over my cheeks, jawline and forhead. A blush warms up the complexion and the Natural Collection blushes are affordable and matte - shimmery cheeks are not the most natural!

For eyes I forget about eyeshadow and just curl my lashes and apply a smudge proof mascara to the base of my lashes and use a spoolie to blend it up. This looks clump free but still defines my non-existent lashes. If I've been up all night revising, I like to brighten my eyes with a nude eyeliner in my waterline. To tame my brows I have been enjoying this tinted brow gel from Maybelline. Then to finish the look I like tinted lip balms such as baby lips.

Hope this helps you if you have a school as strict as mine or if you just like no-makeup makeup!
What are your favourite school-appropriate makeup bits?

My Favourite Movies | The Day Off

If you know me well, you know I love nothing better than a long night in with a box of milk tray, a bottle of lemonade and a pile of great movies. These are my top 6 (top 5 is just too hard!), all in different categories but my all time fave is and will always be Love Actually.

'Get the Tissues Prepped' Award
Charlie St Cloud

You know its going to happen but I still cry every time I watch this - so sad but so darn happy I just well up at every given moment and I don't cry at much!

'Giggles and Smiles' Award
 The Lorax

This little orange tree guardian is my favourite movie character ever and I love the sweet characters plus music! Adorbs!

'Hold Your Breath Cos It's' Award
 Red Riding Hood

Why couldn't Catherine Hardwicke do all the Twilights? Why!!! This is amazing for watching time and time again as the scarier moments always scare me - I love the ending too!

'Classic' Award
Harry Potter

My favourite is The Goblet of Fire for all the action and characters. I'd love to sing 'Go Go Gryffindor' I've always associated myself with Ravenclaw house - the colour scheme fits me so well! Everyone has to love HP, right!

'The Best' Award
Love Actually

I sob at some parts of this too - so happy, so funny and so many darn good actors and actresses. And as much as my mum would never agree, I want a wedding like Keira Knightly's!

What are your favourite movies? What house would you be in?

Superfacialist by Una Brennan Rose Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser | The Review

The Superfacialist by Una Brennan Rose Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser *and breathe* is my new go-to morning cleanse. After immediate use I knew my cleansing balm was far too heavy for two uses a day and I had to find something to work for the mornings when I just wanted a blank canvas for my makeup. I chose Soap and Glory's Peaches and Clean (loooove xxx kisses for P&C) but after hearing Miss Budget Beauty say her skin had become somewhat immune to it as a cleanser from over use, I decided to find something to use on the inbetween months from using P&C and using something else (see more on this concept later this month in an updated skincare routine). I'd heard great things about this line and wanting something that wasn't a gel and mineral-oil free (someone's spent a lot of time on beautymouth.com), I opted for a cleansing cream.

So, first impressions were not great. I massaged it onto dry skin and removed with a muslin cloth but after a few days use my skin just felt clogged and unclean - maybe I was using too little, too much? Then one day I applied it with wet hands and it worked amazingly - my skin felt refreshed and clean! Fabby!
The scent is very strong and rosey - of your don't like rose it will put you off straightaway. It is very gentle so a good thing for more sensitive skins. I don't see the hydrating side - creamy? I haven't noticed a difference there but maybe the dry skin months coming up will put it in the spotlight!

A definite try if you're looking for a gentle cleanser.

Have you tried anything from this line?

Make Your Own Lip Scrub | The DIY

Everybody has done one of these types of posts and I'm a little late on the bandwagon but I thought I'd show you how I make a lip scrub - it's quick, easy and you only need 2 things. I always make one application as I find I don't use it if it goes in a pot and then I find a sticky mixture in my bathroom cabinet 3 weeks later *sorry mum!*.

I start with 1/s a teaspoon of honey (you could use olive oil if your prefer but it would be a little runnier) and put that in a little pot. I then use 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar (any kind but salt works for a harsher scrub) and mix that in. It should look something like this:

Then take a good amount on your fingers and massage into your lips - repeat if you have super flakey lips and then follow up with a lip balm. Silky smooth lips for brighter shades, here we come!

How do you make lip scrubs? Have you tried any branded ones (ie Lush)?

Maybelline Baby Lips UK Review and Swatches | The New Thing

It seems like everyone and their mother now has baby lips after about 3 weeks of waiting for them to hit the shelves. I've now had mine for a few weeks and can honestly say I really like them but do I think they're worth the hype?

The shades I purchased were the original 'Hydrate' clear one, the hot pink 'Pink Punch' and a nude called 'Peach Kiss'. One thing that did strike me at first was the amazing scent. I don't recall any lucky American bloggers mentioning the gorgeous smells but if you do get some, give 'em a whiff as they're divine!
Peach Kiss is very sheer and the perfect pale, slightly shimmery nude shade that looks extremely natural but what do you expect from a tinted lip balm in a shade lighter than most people's natural lip colour? Pink Punch is the star shade for me as it can be left as a sheer baby pink or can be built up to a vivid bright, almost neon, pink. The staying power isn't amazing but then they are lip balms!
They're moisturising, smooth on the lips and the packaging is so super cute! They live up to my expectations fully however, for they hype they did recieve, at the end of the day they are just lip balms and aren't much different to the common offerings from Miss Sporty or plain old Carmex.

Have you tried Baby Lips? What do you think?
